About the class

Scholarly ranged casters who wield arcane, fire and frost magic, keep groups supplied and send travelers through portals.

History & role

Mages learn their craft through study and discipline rather than prayer or pacts. Humans learned arcane magic from the high elves during the Troll Wars.

The heart of the tradition is the Kirin Tor in Dalaran, an order of scholars that gathers arcane research and teaching. From there the knowledge spread further.

What sets the class apart

  • Teleports and portals

From level 20, mages learn teleport spells for their faction's capitals, and portals from level 40. Teleports carry the mage, portals carry whole groups. Each cast consumes a matching rune.

  • Food and water

Mages conjure food and water for themselves and their group. This saves gold and downtime while regenerating health and mana.

  • Polymorph

Polymorph turns a target into a harmless critter for a while. In groups it is one of the class's most important crowd control tools.

  • Frost Nova and Blink

Frost Nova roots nearby enemies briefly and Blink hops the mage forward. Together they keep the distance that cloth armor demands.

Class quests & milestones

  • Arcane Refreshment

Available at level 60 as a short group quest in Dire Maul; rewards the highest rank of Conjure Water.
