The interview
Gamespot interviewed two developers about WoW: Forever at BlizzCon 2026: Josh Greenfield (Senior Game Designer) and Jeff Parrot (Senior Art Director). Here is a summary of the key points.
- Quests in original WoW (approx.)
- 3.000-3.500
- new quests
- 1.000
- new zones with 50-200 quests each
- 4
- level where new content starts appearing
- 5
New quests
- The developers estimate original WoW had roughly 3,000 to 3,500 quests. Forever adds 1,000 more.
- Four new zones bring between 50 and 200 quests each.
- Wetlands and Azshara also get many new quests.
- From level 5 onwards you will start to see new content.
- Many quests in the original are iconic and memorable because they explore the world at a relatable level.
- The new zones are meant to feel familiar yet new, so players might ask: did this exist?
Design approach
- Internally the saying for Classic+ is: ask 10 players what they want and you get 11 answers.
- The team listens to social media and their own guilds. If they can deliver about 80% of what almost everyone wants, that counts as a success.
- Transmog and the HD/SD toggles are examples, so it is your Classic+ as much as possible.
- Season of Discovery was designed as an ephemeral experimental mode, and much of it is likely not coming to a Forever game mode.
On the Skyborne
- Early on, the team talked to Chris Metzen about the race.
- They knew early that it would be a race of elves, as elves are very popular.
- The Skywall culture kit was underused and has not been seen since Cataclysm.
