Grouped quest drops: bad luck protection in WoW: Forever

The problem in Classic

WoW Classic developer Josh "Aggrend" Greenfield explained on X how quest items are handled in groups in WoW: Forever. Asked whether drops are changing in general, the short answer is no. There is, however, a change under the hood.

In WoW: Classic, quest items are not shared and do not drop evenly. One group member can already have 8 of 10 furbolg parts while another sits at 1 of 10. Many players therefore avoided grouping for drop quests, and whoever lagged behind was left awkwardly finishing alone.

The Forever solution

In line with its pro-social approach, WoW: Forever distributes quest items among group members in a more predictable round-robin fashion. It is not pure round robin, though, and some randomness remains. It works more like bad luck protection: if you have not seen a drop in a while while others pull ahead, you are favored.

  • The system is still being tuned.
  • According to Greenfield, a bit of grind on drop quests is part of the vanilla feel and stays.
  • In a group it becomes less feast or famine, and you kill things much faster.
  • With the Recent Allies feature you are likely to meet people you grouped with again in later sessions, maybe even making a friend.
